Dr. Jenn Branch Presents "Turning Vocabulary into Academic Language" at California Math Council - South

Turning vocabulary into academic language requires more than memorizing a definition and having students repeat the words back to you. Being able to define a term, use it correctly in writing and speaking, and understand its use by someone else are all important language skills and yet all require different cognitive demands. 

Key features of the this session included working through various math activities designed to provide opportunities to use vocabulary in interesting and meaningful ways. Working through number puzzles, explaining one’s thought process, and creating one’s own number puzzle provided participants with opportunities to help students build on these cognitive skills. Participants left with tools that allowed them to bring math vocabulary to life in their classrooms and strive toward turning math vocabulary into academic language.
